PII information we get from Amazon - and why and how we use it
At INTERMAIL AG, we never use or save personally identifiable information (PII) we receive from Amazon except in cases when this sort of data is needed for shipping of products you bought on Amazon from our customers, more specifically for printing the shipping labels to ship those products to you. Please read below what PII information we receive from Amazon and how we process this data.
When you buy products from us on Amazon, we sometimes handle the shipping of those products in packages that we send to your address ourselves. In order to create the shipping labels for those packages, we access the Amazon Selling Partner (SP) API, which enables us to get your address data your submitted on Amazon when finalizing your transaction.
PII data (Personally Identifiable Information), with regards to how we receive it from Amazon and use it, is information that can identify an individual. It contains direct identifiers (for example your first name, last name and address containing street, street number, zipcode and city) that can identify a person uniquely, or quasi-identifiers (e.g., race) that can be combined with other quasi-identifiers (e.g., date of birth) to successfully recognize an individual.
We never save any PII data we receive from Amazon via their SP API. We use it as follows: When you placed an order at Amazon and we become aware of the fact that we will need to ship it to you (meaning we'll need to print a shipping label), we ask the Amazon SP API for access to the following PII related to your order, which they restrict by default:
- buyerInfo - This info is related to details about the order in general and additional info about the contained products, e.g. gift wrapping.
- shippingAddress - This info is related to printing a printing label and shipping it to you.
Amazon validates that we're authorized to read this data and temporarily grants us access to request it. After requesting and receiving this data, we generally relay it to a service provider for shipping packages (e.g. DHL). Your data is not saved anywhere on our systems during this process or after it is completed.
If you're interested in the more technical details about how this works, information is provided by Amazon in their developer documentation here and you may always reach out to us via our contact form if you have any questions about this process or the data we access.
